A three-club retrospective of the Champions League fixtures recorded on 8–9 September: City won away, Arsenal prevailed late and Liverpool came from behind.

Retrospective · Coverage window: 2026-09-08 to 2026-09-09. Published separately from the original match reports.

A strong start across two nights

Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool each began their Champions League league-phase campaigns with a win across 8 and 9 September. The three results were different in shape: City took a 2–0 away victory in Porto, Arsenal won 1–0 at Napoli, and Liverpool beat Atlético Madrid 2–1 at Anfield. Each result brought three opening-match points to the club concerned.

The scores alone show the contrast. City kept a clean sheet and scored twice after the interval. Arsenal’s match stayed goalless until Martin Ødegaard struck in the 75th minute. Liverpool had to recover from an early deficit before taking the lead in the second half.

Different turning points

Erling Haaland scored in the 47th minute and again in stoppage time for City. Arsenal’s narrow win came despite a high shot count: Opta recorded 26 attempts and estimated the teams’ expected goals at 4.05 for Arsenal and 0.22 for Napoli. Those figures describe one match and one model’s estimates; they do not turn the 1–0 score into a forecast.

At Anfield, Marcos Llorente scored first for Atlético, Dominik Szoboszlai levelled before the break, and Alexis Mac Allister put Liverpool ahead five minutes into the second half. The three outcomes share a useful opening-week theme—winning starts—but not a single tactical template.
