Different scorelines, same Friday outcome

Two English Football League home sides finished Friday, 30 October, with three points, but in very different ways. Newport County beat Chesterfield 4–1 in League Two after scoring four times before the break. In the Championship, Sheffield United edged Wrexham 1–0 through Ben Brereton Díaz’s first-half goal.

Newport’s goals came from Cameron Norman, Tom Davies, Harrison Biggins and Yahya Bamba. The sequence grew from a free-kick opener to a deflected finish, a long-range strike and a curled effort in stoppage time. Chesterfield’s Liam Mandeville scored after the interval, but the four-goal first-half margin was enough for Newport to manage the closing stages.

A single chance made the difference at Bramall Lane

Sheffield United’s match was tighter. Brereton Díaz finished after Wrexham goalkeeper Anthony Patterson had saved Jordan Ayew’s attempt. Sky’s match account recorded one Wrexham shot on target and five shots on target across both teams. The result moved Sheffield United to tenth immediately after the final whistle, one point from the play-off places before the rest of the weekend’s fixtures.

That table position is a dated snapshot, not a statement about the final weekend standings. Newport’s own result also had a table consequence: the EFL reported that victory lifted the club to tenth in League Two and extended its unbeaten home league run to nine games. The two tenth-place references belong to different divisions.
