Liverpool’s autumn snapshot: three close matches with different endings

A comeback against Atlético, a shoot-out against Chelsea and a narrow defeat by Arsenal show three different ways a close match can turn. This is a review of three selected fixtures, not Liverpool’s complete autumn record.
Retrospective · Coverage window: 2026-09-09 to 2026-11-01. Published separately from the original match reports.
Three matches, three turning points
Liverpool recovered to beat Atlético Madrid 2–1 at Anfield on 9 September. Alexis Mac Allister scored the winning goal in the second half. That European opener produced a home win after Liverpool had fallen behind, an important distinction from simply recording the final score.
The Chelsea cup tie on 28 October followed a different route. The teams were level at 1–1 after normal time, and Liverpool advanced by winning the penalty shoot-out 6–5. A shoot-out victory decides who progresses; it does not turn the regulation-time score into a Liverpool league win.

Arsenal made an early lead last
On 1 November, Arsenal won 1–0 at Anfield after Kai Havertz scored in the 16th minute. Liverpool’s report describes the build-up from an attempted home goal-kick and Florian Wirtz striking the crossbar before half-time. The result remained close, but Liverpool did not find an equaliser.
Across these selected fixtures, the decisive moments arrived at different stages: a second-half winner, a penalty shoot-out and an early goal that proved enough. They are useful match histories, rather than a complete form guide. The competitions, opponents and routes to the result were different.

The takeaway
Read the match context before grouping results together. Liverpool’s cup progress and the Arsenal defeat can both be true, while a shoot-out score belongs in its own column. These three examples do not establish a reliable forecast for Liverpool’s next fixture.
