Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on 24 October, scoring twice late in a contest that had been goalless at half-time. Mike Penders was credited with an own goal from a Spurs corner, Cole Palmer was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, and Mathys Tel added the visitors’ second. The score and sequence are recorded by Sky Sports and Chelsea’s official match report.

Chances without a breakthrough

The sides reached the interval level despite opportunities at both ends. Chelsea’s report says Palmer and Jordan Henderson tested Antonín Kinský, while Penders made saves against Omar Marmoush and Tel. The Guardian’s account likewise characterised the match as tight before the decisive corner. Chelsea had threatened, but neither goalkeeper had been beaten.

Tottenham broke through from a corner in the closing stages, with Penders credited with an own goal. Chelsea’s account says Jan Paul van Hecke was close to the goalkeeper as the ball went into the net.

Palmer’s dismissal changes the finish

Palmer was dismissed after a second yellow card soon after the opener. Sky’s match record places the red card in the 80th minute; Chelsea confirms he received two cautions within ten minutes. Tel then scored in the 87th minute to complete the 2-0 win. Chelsea had little time to recover after losing a player, and Tottenham made the extra space count with a second goal.

The result was built from a late change in the match rather than an early separation. Both teams had created chances, but Tottenham’s corner produced the breakthrough and the dismissal left Chelsea chasing the game with ten men. Tel’s finish completed Tottenham’s away victory.

Next up for the sides

Chelsea’s official report named Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening as the club’s next match. The quick turnaround gives the side an immediate chance to respond, while the Stamford Bridge defeat leaves a clear closing spell to review: the corner, Palmer’s second booking and Tottenham’s finish. Spurs leave with two late goals after being held at bay through the first half.
