Newcastle United beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Selhurst Park on Sunday 25 October, scoring twice early in the second half. The result is confirmed by Newcastle’s official match report and The Guardian’s report.

A quiet first half gives way to a burst

Palace created a couple of early openings, including a Jean-Philippe Mateta effort that goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček smothered, according to Newcastle’s account. The Guardian described a low-tempo opening with just two shots on target, while Daichi Kamada and Dwight McNeil were involved in Palace’s early attempts. Newcastle’s account also notes Mateta pulled a later shot wide. Newcastle made five changes to its starting side, the club reported, but the match remained goalless at the interval.

Will Osula changed that just after the restart, meeting Jacob Murphy’s cross in the 47th minute. Newcastle nearly added another when Joe Willock finished a through ball from Joelinton, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Harvey Barnes then made it 2-0 in the 58th minute after a move involving Amar Dedić. The official report credits Dedić with the cutback; Sky and the Guardian confirm Barnes’s goal and its timing.

Palace cannot find a reply

Osula’s goal came barely two minutes into the second half, and Barnes followed eleven minutes later. That spell put Newcastle in command after a first half in which chances had been scarce. Newcastle’s report says the five lineup changes included Dan Burn, Fabian Schär, Dedić, Murphy and Osula. The same report says Jacob Ramsey and Anthony Elanga, returning after injury, came on late.

Palace did threaten through Adam Wharton, whose effort Horníček saved, before Dario Osorio tested the goalkeeper from distance. Sky and Newcastle’s report both describe Osorio’s long-range attempt being kept out. Newcastle’s official account said the win moved the side to seventh in the Premier League table after the match. The two goals remained decisive: Palace found no way past Horníček, while Osula and Barnes supplied the difference.
